Guest access is restricted due to the site being the target of numerous automated crawlers (computers that try to download entire sites).
As the AFL.allthestats.com site displays dynamic pages based on selectable filters, there are over 1 Billion iterations of those pages so the automated crawlers get stuck on the site simply trying to do the impossible. This dramatically degrades the performance of the site. Not to mention what this does to my data limits.
We did try an automated "crawler catcher" that caught and banned IPs automatically based on hits to the site, however, this proved ineffective. So the next best thing is to limit the pages they can download at a time.
So, now, if they want to try to download the entire 1 billion + (dynamic) pages of the site, at about 480 pages a day, it will take them about 6,000 years. :)
